Metlink Departures Display
A small departures sign for Wellington buses, built to put the next arrivals somewhere glanceable instead of repeating the same stop lookup.
Independent development. Python, Metlink departures and a home service.
I made this around a bus stop and its next departures, keeping the display small enough to be useful at home while the same lookup could also be read from the command line, with the server and terminal versions sharing the departure information that gave the sign its useful content.
The Python code includes the departure retrieval and a web sign server, with an example systemd service for keeping that display available without starting it by hand each time.
The configured stop and API connection determine the actual arrivals, so the illustration uses the display's structure without presenting made-up minutes as a live service reading.
The catalogue date follows the first preserved commit on 16 January 2026.
Outcome
A compact web and CLI departure display with documented setup. The cover explains the sign format, with no live arrival data implied.
